Guanajuato Travel Guide

Guanajuato is one of the 32 states of Mexico and it is placed in the central uplands of the country. Also Guanajuato is the name of its capital city, Guanajuato, Guanajuato that means "Place of Frogs" in the local indigenous language and therefore the frog is the city's official animal, because the local Tarascan Indians believed that the frog represented the god of wisdom. Guanajuato is the home state of Mexican ex-president Vicente Fox Quesada, and renowned Mexican artist Diego Rivera.

Guanajuato was one of the first areas of Mexico colonized by the Spanish after central Mexico and the Gulf of Mexico coast, in the 1520s, principally for its rich silver deposits. Guanajuato's colonial buildings are very well conserved along with over 35 old churches in its capital alone, and are very European in nature.

Several Tourists and locals consider this city to be the most beautiful in Mexico, and its mines are still among the richest-producing silver mines in the world (historically one of the principal). The state also produces tin, mercury, copper, lead, gold and opals. Guanajuato also is the major shoe producer and various farm products such as lettuce and potatoes. The state's main export products are motor vehicles and auto parts, footwear, leather goods, chemicals, electric machinery and materials, fruits and vegetables.

In addition to the state capital city of Guanajuato, the state includes the cities of San Luis de la Paz, Acámbaro, Celaya, León, Salamanca, Irapuato, San Luis de la Paz, San Miguel de Allende, Salvatierra—the first city of Guanajuato, Cortazar, Tarimoro, and Dolores Hidalgo, the cradle of Mexican independence.
