Attractions of Valladolid

Balankanché, The grotto of the Mayan Treasures.
At these grottoes, you can find the treasures that the Mayas used 800 years before, and admiring the roofs with hundred of stalactites that distill drops of water, that to the being touched by the light of the sun, they twinkles the place. To the center, there is a stunning stalactite united to the floor, like the trunk of a robust tree, in its base you can admire several ceremonial archeological pieces of incalculable worth.

Balankanché opened up to the public to admire its beauty and the mystery of all the ceremonial objects discovered. Nowadays, Balankanché is worthy of being visited, for its natural attractive like for its archeological importance. This attractive place is located 32 Km. of the beautiful Valladolid City.

Chichen Itza
The itzáes's sacred city, Chichén Itzá in Mayan language, it is located to 40 Km of Valladolid, Yucatan. This archeological zone is considered one of the most important archaeological place of the pre-Columbian Maya civilization in the Yucatan Peninsula of Mexico and one of the most visited tourist destinations in this Country. It was granted World Heritage Site status in 1988 by UNESCO World Heritage Site and was short time ago selected as one of the New Seven Wonders of the World.

Ek Balam
This place is famous especially for the enormous dimensions of its buildings, they rapidly attract the attention of its visitors; in the same way, its central part is surrounded by 2 outer walls, what is not very common.

In the inside of this walled place of about more than one kilometer is located the most important structures distributed at 2 big plazas joined, called central plaza and southern plaza, but is not all, there are more interesting and wonderful constructions; definitely, Ek Balam is a great place to visit.

Izamal The Yellow City
This city is known as “the city of three cultures”.

This beautiful city is located to 1 hour of Valladolid, a lot of tour operators right now include Izamal in their journey to Chichén Itzá. Izamal was once an enormous ceremonial Mayan center, and it is more ancient than Chichén and Uxmal.

The pyramid Kinich Kakmo, apparently has an impressive base of 4 hectares, this particularity gives a good idea of its dimensions and greatness. This place was very important for the Mayas (culture number 1), long afterwards, the Spaniards (culture number 2) constructed an enormous convent with the rock of the Mayan buildings. Nowadays, Izamal is a pleasant and pacific tow (culture number 3).

Tihosuco, Museum War of Castes
This building was reconstructed by the government of the state with the objective to transform it in a great museum than consists in four living rooms:

They exhibit paints, photos in the first; replicas, maquettes and documents related with the indigenous motion against Spanishes.

In the second best paints, photos and documents illustrating how was the population of the peninsula in the XIXth century and which social groups inhabited it.

In the third living, you can find documents and objects of common use in the XIXth century and documents that explain the causes of the War of Castes.

At the fourth living room are exhibited photos, weapons, maquettes and documents that narrate the start and development of the War of Castas around the middle of the XIXth century, as well as documents than tell the Chán Santa Cruz foundation, nowadays Felipe Carrillo Puerto.
